Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, universally recognized as Dunga, is a retired Brazilian midfielder and former manager who is currently unattached to any club. Renowned for his tenacity, defensive discipline, and leadership, Dunga etched his name into football history as the captain of Brazil’s World Cup-winning squad in 1994, held in the United States. His gritty, no-nonsense style anchored the midfield, providing the balance that allowed Brazil’s attacking talents to flourish.
Beyond the 1994 triumph, Dunga also represented Brazil in the 1990 and 1998 World Cups, earning 91 caps for the national team. At club level, he enjoyed spells with prominent sides including Internacional, Vasco da Gama, Fiorentina, Parma, and VfB Stuttgart, among others. Following his playing career, Dunga transitioned into coaching, notably managing the Brazilian national team in two separate stints (2006–2010 and 2014–2016). Under his guidance, Brazil won the 2007 Copa América and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. He also managed Internacional, securing the Campeonato Gaúcho in 2013. While his managerial tenure ended without further major silverware, Dunga remains a respected figure in Brazilian football for his uncompromising character and pivotal role in the country’s fourth World Cup victory.
